La Ceiba

Rafting is just an excuse to enjoy the mountain
and cloud forest. |
La Ceiba is a small city of about 200,000 people.
Mountains rise up almost immediately from the coast.
It is a port town and the beaches are not known
for their beauty. However, La Ceiba does have two
important attractions: El Cangrejal river and the
Cuero y Salado reserve. El Cangrejal is a small
river in the mountains and lends itself well to
whitewater rafting. Although not a wide river, it
offers class three and four rapids. In the words
of our guide, though, the rafting is just an excuse
to get out in the mountains and enjoy the day and
the scenery, which includes a waterfall. Lunch and
a nature walk are included with the rafting. This
was one of the highlights of the entire trip.
Cuero
y Salado reserve is a brackish marsh where incredible
wildlife can be found. Birds are high on the list
as well as monkeys. Your guide can even get the
fruit of a spiny palm, and you can eat monkey food.
The wildlife viewing is best early in the morning.
To get to the reserve, you must take a small train
car to a coconut plantation. Often the car is not
there or available and local boys will push you
on a burra the entire distance.
There
are several small hotels, but the only one that
could be considered a three star hotel is La Quinta.
It is built in a Moorish villa style with courtyards
and arches.
