Highlights of Honduras
by Patrick Heyman

hondu01.jpg (13783 bytes)As promised, here is the full report on my travels in Honduras. Accompanying me from Holbrook Travel was Marshall Wisehart and James Frett (both tour specialists) and James Masters (back office). We were testing Holbrook's latest itinerary, the Highlights of Honduras. It's a trip suitable for you, your children, and your parents; each of you will find something of interest in each place. But enough of the commercial, you want to hear what we did.  (In case you just want to see the pictures, I've consolidated them all into a picture gallery.)

I'll spare you the boring details, and just tell you the highlights. We went to Roatan for two nights, La Ceiba one night, Tela one night, San Pedro Sula two nights, and Copan for two nights.

hondu16.jpg (15883 bytes)Before I go into details, let me say two things about Honduras.   First, the food is excellent.  The steak is tender and flavorful; chicken (especially the rotisseried type) is also excellent.  Beans and rice feature prominently, and there is a plethora of tropical fruit; but most of all, don't forget that you are in The Original Banana Republic.  There are several varieties of banana.  In particular, I recommend getting a bunch of baby bananas.  Their taste is exquisite, and the price is right ($1.50 for about three dozen).  Also, do yourself a favor and try the licuados de banano (banana smoothie); tell them to make it with milk.  There is nothing, nothing comparable in the United States.

The second issue is not quite so pleasant.  It has to do with insects.  Honduras is a breeding ground for big mosquitoes and sand flies.   Bring insect repellant.  When you go to the beach, take your insect repellant along also, because in the later afternoon, the sand flies come out unless it is a windy day.  The mosquitoes and sand flies are without a doubt, the biggest drawback to traveling in Honduras. Fortunately, it is one that can be controlled with a little planning. (If you forget your repellant, they sell repellant in Honduras, so buy some and enjoy.)

My colleagues and I thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Honduras, even though we were working, and I am sure that you will enjoy yours even more.  Let's go see what the Highlights of Honduras has in store:
