Young sun breaks upon a virgin day
Young
Sun breaks upon a virgin day
Upturned heads rejoice in glory
Severed dawn shines upon the lonely
Seasoned snores lifted in praise
Spry footsteps bring new life to the empty chamber
Laughter echoes and joy fills the air
Heavy footfalls accentuate the barren room
Tear falling on the floor shatters and dies forgotten
Shining faces lift in praise
Souls reach up and touch the face of God
Lowered faces glisten with falling tears
Spirit cries out to God for mercy
Eyes turn round and see pain
Sorrow joins praise
Frown turns to smile
Young Sun sets upon the Glory of God

Analysis and Background
This poem was written in 1993 one
Sunday morning during church, while I was at the
Air Force Academy. It's one of the more abstract
poems that I've written, because even I'm not sure
what I mean by it half the time. I understand what
I was trying to say, but when I read it, I see more
than I wrote. This is definitely one of those cases
where a poem takes on more life than its author
meant. The poem is written in opposing couplets.
One couplet talks about something good, and the
next talks about a contrast. There are images of
worship throughout the poem; I was in church after
all. The end of the poem was the joy that could
be found if the people in church could join the
lonely, the lost, the hurting in worshipping God.
Jesus said that he came to help the hurting.
